Onyx, a precious marble

Onyx, from the Greek onyks, is a very rare marble formed by colored limestone sediments, which was formed by calcareous concretions of spring and infiltration water.
It comes in different colors. Here are some of our favorite types:

orange onyx: extracted in the Middle East, it has an orange-yellow color with ovules surrounded by refined light veins. It is a particularly elegant material that is striking for its colors that recall the various shades of the sun;
green onyx: extracted in India and Pakistan, it has green areas that resemble dense vegetation and which are crossed by irregular white, brown and red veins. It is a real triumph of green!
white onyx: comes from ancient Persia (now Iran), very pure, has a very fine and delicate grain and is pure white with a homogeneous structure. It is very rare and precious.
honey onyx: it is a precious material with very fine internal streaks.

All onyx have unique characteristics: hardness and resistance, durability over time, impact resistance and impermeability.

The feature that most of all makes this stone so special is its natural transparency, which allows light to penetrate inside: onyx is therefore ideal for the back-lit effect, forming plays of light that create an muffled and suggestive. It is also well suited to “open book” processing which is a cutting technique obtained by opening the slabs of the same block like the pages of a book.

Onyxes, it must be said, are very delicate materials, with partial resistance to frost and not resistant to acids.
For this reason, the areas of application are mainly interiors such as floors, walls, stairs, bathrooms and kitchens, where a valuable material is to be used. Furnishing accessories, artistic elements, objects and sculptures are also made of onyx.

The finish that allows this material to keep its characteristics intact is polishing.

As far as cleaning and maintenance are concerned, it is advisable to pay attention to avoiding acid products, anti-limescale products and ammonia-based detergents which can compromise the glossy surface.

The simple combination of water and alcohol or the use of neutral detergents dissolved in water are truly ideal for removing stains and leaving the surfaces and brilliance of a truly unique marble unaltered, which goes perfectly with both classic and modern styles.
