Stairs have always played an important role in various environments as they are able to give them personality, whether we are talking about civil homes or buildings for commercial use. Let’s start from the assumption that the stairs are subject to frequent trampling, therefore it is necessary to choose carefully between the different types of materials, opting for those that are more resistant to daily wear.
First of all, let’s start by distinguishing between internal and external ones.
The choice of covering for the steps of an external staircase requires particular attention because in addition to the aesthetic aspect, it is necessary to favor anti-freeze materials, i.e. suitable for the coldest temperatures, resistant to the passage of time and bad weather.
Among the most suitable types of stone for external cladding are granites such as Beola, Pietra di Luserna, Serizzo, Sardinian granites and all quartzites.
Granites are materials that have very low absorption and therefore hardly get stained.
In choosing the most suitable solutions for internal stairs and landings, the range of possible materials is wider since it also includes those that are not resistant to frost, even if in any case it is necessary to bear in mind the need to opt for durable stones.
A marble staircase is certainly a good choice because it adapts well to both more classic and more distinctly modern environments.
The most suitable materials are White Carrara, Vratza and Travertine.
Granites are practically indestructible and therefore are always advisable: in the list we put quartzites in first place, in their various colours, then Sardinian granites, serizzi, gneiss and so on and so forth.
Granites are extremely hard and unalterable materials that are not subject to nicks and scratches.
In the landings and stairwells of condominiums, where passage is very frequent, they ensure truly excellent results in terms of durability and resistance over the years.
An alternative to keep in great consideration are the agglomerates of marble and quartz: these are materials obtained from the combination of marble or quartz granules, dyes and resins which have characteristics very similar to natural materials and which have a remarkable hardness and consistency and for this reason they have all the properties to withstand the wear and tear of internal stairs.
Our company is the exclusive distributor for Emilia Romagna of the Quarella® brand, leader in the sector of agglomerates and we have a wide range of colors and finishes, moreover at low costs compared to other stones.
For the internal stairs of houses and condominiums, shiny and smooth surfaces are preferred.
As far as external stairs are concerned, the optimal processing is that which makes the surfaces rough and non-slip and therefore the most suitable surfaces are the flat-sawn, flamed and bush-hammered ones.
